Why is GFGU Different…The Commons Vision!

At Growing From the Ground Up, we believe food should flow like sunlight — abundant, shared, and life-giving.

When you buy from Alberta farmers through GFGU, you’re doing more than filling your basket:

  • You lower costs for everyone. The more families who join, the more efficient our routes become. Logistics costs drop, and those savings flow back to you.
  • You strengthen farmers. When farmers can sell most of what they grow through GFGU, they can plan better, reduce waste, and pass on lower prices.
  • You unlock new capacity. Together, we can support things like local animal processing, making food more available and affordable for everyone.

This is a positive spiral: more support → lower costs → more abundance → stronger communities.

We call it a commons because it’s not just about transactions. It’s about building a system where farmers, families, and communities all thrive together.

Thea brings on the fun when you approach the food truck or the market stall. She’s everywhere, talking to everyone and always has a smile to share. She loves getting to know people and finding out what they like. She made sure their food truck was so attractive and intriguing that people just had to approach it. Jon’s pastries sell themselves, once a person tastes them. Thea makes sure that happens.

Our Featured Farmer Kelly Worthington

Whispering Wind Farms

Whispering Winds pigs1

We would like to introduce ourselves! Myself, Kelly Worthington and my husband, Jon Lendvoy bought our farm in the Fall of 2010. I was an avid horse girl with always the desire for breeding and Jon an outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman.

We found about a new breed of swine that had arrived into Canada, Kunekune Pigs. They were well known for the gentle demeanor, easy to contain, and the best no rooting. We knew instantly this pig breed would work with our grass-fed beef. We bought our first pair from two separate breeders and a pair from a new breeder that had just done an outstanding import from one of the top breeders in the United States who concentrated on Kunekune Pasture Pork. We contacted that breeder, Ivanleigh Farms, and placed a deposit on a breeding pair.

In 2018, we started producing our very own Rare Kunekune Pasture Pork and proud to be the first retail supplier in Western Canada.  We took our pork a step farther and in 2020 started offering Charcuterie.

In January 2022, we took the plunge and moved our little Farm east of Carstairs to west of Didsbury to a 157 acre Farm to concentrate more on rotational and cover crop grazing.
