Pantries and Root Cellars
I recently came across this very interesting family sharing their homesteading on an 1840's farm in Pensylvania. How I would love to have a larder like this!
|
"Waardenburg Family Farm - Our farmsteading journey on a 1840's 42 acre farm in Central Pennsylvania."
|
In this youtube video they share how they set up their pantry and Don whitewashes the limestone walls!

Homesteading
If you are interesting in homesteading or older buildings this can be an interesting video for you.

Mark and I spent 5 -10 years renovating old homes and we just love it! In one home, built in 1900, we came across false walls and peeling back all the renovations people had done over the years to reveal original floors in the kitchen with burn marks from the coal stove... that has to be everything wonderful! We kept it all as it added so much charm and history!
|
But Pantries... I love that!

"Hi! I'm Deanna, but a lot of you may know me as DeannaCat. I am all about simple living, growing (and eating!) plants, and tending to my family and ecosystem the best I can. My hope is to inspire a love for a similar lifestyle or hobbies in others, by sharing real-life tips and tools to make “modern homesteading” activities easy, relatable, and enjoyable ~ so you can learn and dive in with me!
It’s always a bit awkward to talk about yourself, but I suppose it’s good to open up and share some things with you, to give you a better idea about my background, passions, and where I am coming from with all this.

"This isn’t your classic beautifully layered lasagna—but it is a little more weeknight-friendly. Instead of boiling the noodles in one pot and making the sauce in another, you cook lasagna noodles directly in a mixture of milk, crème fraîche, water, and a little lemon zest, which thickens arounds the pasta as it bubbles away...."

Vertical Gardening
|
The Babylonians are the innovators behind the most well-known example of early advanced agriculture systems. Built nearly 2,500 years ago, their hanging gardens are thought to be the earliest prototype of a vertical farm (vertical refers to the practice of growing the plants upward to maximize growing space).
|
Beyond this ancient Wonder of the World, there are myriad examples of how civilizations have worked to manipulate their environments to make farming easier and/or more productive. One thousand years ago, the Mesoamerican Aztec society pioneered a form of hydroponics (hydroponics is the science of growing plants without soil in a nutrient-rich solution). The Aztecs grew plants on marshy ‘rafts’ suspended in rivers and shallow lake beds. The remnants of these small, rectangular areas of fertile, arable land, known as chinampas, can still be seen in Mexico City today.

May 17 2022 · Saw these prices for eggs at Walmart this weekend. WALMART. And I wanted to take a second to educate on what the difference is. In the first photo you see: Free Run Omega-3 eggs for $6.94 Free run= not in a cage, but still in a community building. Think 10,000 chickens on the concrete floor of a large "barn". No access to the outside. But they aren't kept in cages, right? Omega-3 = an omega 3 powder supplement sprinkled in their processed feed. Much the same that we as humans would take in a vitamin supplement. Less than 3% of that translates to the eggs. In the second photo you see: organic, free range brown eggs for $6.28 (was $7.07) .... read more!

It has been super challenging to find time to do these newsletters. I love to write to you to share everything but we have been sooo busy.... some of the things we are working on, it developing Grand Prairie Market.... Our data base which I mentioned before.... still ongoing
We are talking to a producer of sauces... hopefully something soon, a Candle producer from Medicine Hat, A Chicken producer from Rocky Mountain House.... We always seem to be running out of chickens... and also on a more political front Mark has been talking to farmers to put together a proposal for the provincial government to support processing of animals. Farmers often have up to a 6 month wait or more to get their animals inspected etc. That has come from one of community members who is quite in government processes. One of Us!
|
One last thing... If you are interested in posting on the site, have stories, recipes or are interested in doing a newsletter... I'd love to talk to you... canning, food preservation... any of those things....
|
An interesting stat for you... The newsletter went out to over 400 people!
|
Thank you!
