What about a Christmas Dinner Medieval Style?!

The Madrigal Banquet in Colorado Springs!

The Glen Eyrie Castle

With a more than thirty-year history, this spectacular holiday event continues to be a Colorado classic. Set in the grandeur of The Great Hall of The Castle, our 16th century-style banquet and performance is sure to inspire and prepare your heart for this Christmas season as we focus on the true meaning of Christmas, our Savior’s birth.

This is a full evening, with a 4-course dinner and performance. You’ll enjoy music, dancing and plenty of humor with our talented troupe of performers. The banquet typically lasts over 3 hours.
No visit to Colorado Springs is complete without a stop at Glen Eyrie Castle, and no visit to Glen Eyrie Castle is complete without experiencing our afternoon tea!

Well this newsletter is featuring British Fare!

We have our very own Edmonton Based Meat Street Pies owned by Thea and based on British fare... and also Karl, originally from England owning Lone Valley Sheep Farm just south of Calgary! We thought it would be awesome to feature Karl and Thea because if you are looking for something authentic and delicious - these two have it!

From South Africa

Having lived in South Africa for 7 years, and being that my father was South African... we grew up in a society that was hugely British, but also was a diverse place. I remember listening to the call to prayer, the sonorous chanting from the Mosque coming over the valley in the early mornings. We ate curries, samosas, and British steak and kidney pies, Shepherd's Pie, Liver and Eggs for breakfast and "Melktert" (milk tart) a traditional South African Milk Pie. And there was Mieliepap, (corn meal porridge).

(I will include some recipes here for you if you want to give it a go! South African desserts can be quite sweet so you may have to adapt the sugar! I remember tiny porcelain tea cups and people would put 6 small teaspoons of sugar in one cup of tea!)

From "My Recipes" by

I was curious if the Voortrekkers—the Afrikaner boers (farmers who descended from the Dutch settlers) who traversed the difficult terrain from the Cape in the west to Kwa-Zulu Natal in the east by ox-wagon—were indeed the first to introduce maize meal porridge to South Africa, as suggested by some online sources. Both dried maize and millet, being easy to store with an ample shelf life, are said to have contributed to their survival.

A long Southern African porridge-making tradition was in place before the arrival of Europeans. Across the continent’s ancient grasslands, drought-resistant wild cereal grains like millet and sorghum were stamped and ground to make flour for porridge and other staples.

Mealie Pap Is a South African Breakfast for All

From "All that's Jas"!

Milk tart is a South African dessert consisting of a sweet pastry crust and a creamy, custard-like filling made of milk, eggs, sugar, and flour. It's believed that milk tarts such as this one may have originated amongst settlers at the Dutch Cape Colony in the 17th Century. All recipes vary, but the common denominator is a rich, creamy filling cooked either inside or outside the crust, baked or cooked on the stove.
It's like eating pudding in a cookie crust, so what's not to love? It's effectively the South African version of Greek milk pie and sugar cream pie, both the Hoosier and my homeland's favorite one - krempita.

A deep dive into British pub culture

From Readers' Digest

Custodian of traditions

Behind the allure of every great British pub stands a publican—a custodian of traditions and the animated soul of the establishment. Often intricately woven into the fabric of the pub, publicans frequently possess a familial or community connection to the establishment, contributing to a sense of continuity and familiarity.
The evolution of British pubs extends beyond liquid libations to encompass an array of gastronomic delights, transforming these establishments into gastronomic havens known as gastropubs. Traditional dishes like fish and chips, bangers and mash, and steak and ale pie share space with culinary innovations that elevate pub fare to gourmet heights. The olfactory allure of hearty meals permeates the air, tempting patrons to indulge in culinary creations that complement the pub's convivial atmosphere.

His background is in sheep farming and is a regenerative farmer which means he does it right! Proper grazing and moving his sheep, they are fed right. He uses no hormones or anti-antibiotics unless a sheep is ill and the sheep is not put back into the flock until everything is good. He grows his own hay so he knows exactly what his sheep are fed! And when the sheep are butchered, they are sent to within 15 minutes of the farm and have no stress. He cares for his sheep!

Interesting Agriculture issues with our food

Here are some interesting videos and articles about some of the problems with the commercial food industry.

These past few weeks I have been reading and watching videos about food fraud. It is not new and some of it I am sure you already knew about, like prosciutto ham. But there are issues with Virgin Olive Oil, Ground Beef (a European issue) and a few other products as well.

Here is one about honey!

All about Honey

This is an interesting video about what commercial honey producers do to honey by adding fillers and removing pollen.
We have two honey producers with us, Hilltop Honey near Okotoks, and Sweet Oaks Honey by St Albert. Honey starts at $10. Both are unpasteurized, but filtered to remove the honey comb.
