LAMB'S LETTUCE

Unlike other salad crops, which can develop a bitter taste when temperatures start to fall in autumn, lambs' lettuce slows down its growth so its leaves remain succulent and flavoursome. Its fresh, nutty flavour makes it the perfect addition to salads, particularly as a foil for stronger tasting leaves like rocket and mustard leaves.

Hearty Foods

I worked as a second cook on the rigs for about a year or so. I was the salad person and sometimes filled in for the cook when they were either leaving the camp or when they were coming in for their 3 week rotation. I had about 60 salads I made over 3 weeks which was my work schedule for the camp. 3 weeks in and 1 week out. When time allowed I would make samosas and a spinach feta stuffed bread loaf. The cook, her name was Doris, was a whiz at baking cinnamon buns and bran muffins. All without a recipe if you can imagine! She would whip up this wonderful fresh bread, crunchy on the outside and sooo heavenly!

There were favourite salads the guys loved, and one of them is a Broccoli cheese salad. When ever in doubt - it is a man's favourite salad! They also love pickled eggs... Just an FYI!

Here are some more if you are looking to cook for your favourite guy!

Serving food a man loves to eat! ...A Savory cheese bake!

Spinach, Tomato, & Feta Stuffed Bread

We are suckers for good bread. Especially when it is stuffed with cheese. The tangy feta paired with savory spinach and tomatoe remind me of so many of my favourite Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Only this is stffed inside a soft french bread. When sliced it is perfect for a holiday apetizer!

Broccoli Salad

When it comes to barbecue side dishes, broccoli salad is king of the spread. It's a flavor and texture smorgasbord with crunchy broccoli, smoky almonds, salty bacon, sweet and chewy dried cranberries, and a zippy, creamy dressing coating the whole thing. Our love for broccoli recipes is no joke, and this summer side deserves a place at the top of the list.

Feta Spinach Stuffed French Bread

This easy, cheesy, creamy Feta Spinach Stuffed French Bread is deliriously rich and tasty. It reminds me of a Greek spanakopita, but all stuffed inside a wonderful loaf of sourdough bread. Sliced, it’s a perfect appetizer for parties!

NEW Growers and Producers!

Spinach anyone?

We have a new vendor coming on board soon, Mike Slimmon of Green Euphoria. We have asked him to grow spinach for you to test out the market and he is not quite ready to launch his product yet... but soon! He has kale and arugula and will be posting them soon. Mike from Red Deer area and grows gorgeous lettuce already and hope he may also add cilantro to his crops!

Corn!

Another grower from Grand Prairie area grows corn! I would love to taste that! But I don't think we will be able to add Grand Prairie until the fall some time.. a combination of money and finding a driver to go between Edmonton and Grand Prairie.

Farmer News

Edmonton Area NW Farms:

Fire fighting news. One of our farmers was under evacuation notice and he was telling us it was quite stressful. The fires came to within 3/4 miles of his farm. He is ok, his family and so are his animals.

We are thankful he and his family are safe.

I know a number of years ago when there were the BC fires. We were in a small town that was under evacuation. One of the ranchers there was telling us about his experience. His cattle were trapped by the fences. Some were injured and many scattered to escape the fire. There were a lot of cattle that ended up on our property. We notified the RCMP because we didn't know whose cattle they were, which direction they had come from. Other cattle were on the roads. Lots of trouble. This farmer had extensive damage, also with all his fencing which he had just replaced that year. For a farmer, there is a lot at risk.

Lethbridge:

There is a Home and Garden Show at the Lethbridge Public Library Saturday May 20th from 10am to 3pm... some of our farmers and producers will be there to talk to you, to hand out samples, some free, some for sale!

PMA News

We are now under the PMA - you need to sign up to be able to buy.

We are very excited... Still lots to do but here is an outline of our vision!

Recreating the neighbourhood as an extended family
Supports economy, sharing, connection
Where is the food coming from, how the farmer treats their animals. Our members want to know their neighbourhood farmer. They want to trust again and trust each other.

We are transitioning to a PMA to ensure that those people who have these values are heard and supported and to ensure these community values are upheld. We are a community of neighbours.! Neighbours as a verb. It is an action of caring and sharing with each other.
